Black History: Dorothy Height (1912 – 2010)

Point #1
Born on March 24, 1912, in Richmond, Virginia. The daughter of a building contractor and a nurse. Height moved with her family to Rankin, Pennsylvania, in her youth. There, she attended racially integrated schools.

Point #2
Graduated in 1933 from New York University with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in educational psychology.

Point #3
The numerous honors bestowed upon her include the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1994) and the Congressional Gold Medal (2004).

Point #4
In 1963 she helped organize the March on Washington working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Continuing to push for women’s rights, she co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus.

Point #5
The United States Postal Service added civil rights activist Dorothy Height to its Black Heritage Series on the Forever Stamp.
