Point #1
Born in Lansing, Michigan to Elizabeth Hortense (Golden) Canady and Dr. Clinton Canady, Jr.  Canady’s parents taught her about the importance of education and hard work as a child, which would help ultimately her graduate from high school with honors.

Point #2
Attended the University of Michigan where she received her B.S. degree in zoology in 1971 and became a member of Delta Sigma Theta. She later received her M.D. with cum laude honors from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1975.

Point #3
She then became the first African American woman neurosurgery resident in the US at the University of Minnesota.

Point #4
In 1981, Alexa Canady became the first female African-American neurosurgeon in the United States.

Point #5
She became Chief of Neurosurgery at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in 1987 and held the position until her retirement in 2001.
